Both parents are illiterate and daily wage earners. They send their child to balwadi because the child is in safe custody for about 6 hours and also gets free mid-day meal. This helps them to go to their workplace.

She, as a routine, goes to Balwadi, plays, eats, sleeps and returns home. She has no exposure to basic education. No active learning takes place in her life.

SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING IN LANGUAGE AND ARITHMETIC

Conduct support class to attain COMPETENCE IN LANGUAGE AND ARITHMETIC for students of classes 2 to 5 for about ten months and prepare her to learn other subjects on her own.

Why the need to help?

These children have never had a strong foundation in language and numbers. They are not able to read fluently and have difficulty with comprehension. In arithmetic struggle to do simple addition and subtraction. Both parents not educated sufficiently and are unable to support their wards' education. What the children learn from their school is the end of it.

Student’s profile

She, as a routine, goes to school, memorizes the concepts without understanding, copies whatever is written on the blackboard. In spite of schooling for 3 or 4 years she is unable to read a word in her own language and do simple two digit arithmetic.

Provide free education for a deserving child for ONE YEAR IN ENGLISH MEDIUM PRIMARY SCHOOL

Why the need to help?

Orphans or semi orphans among Tsunami affected children of fishermen families in Nagapattinam (3 to 6 year olds) have not been exposed to modern education. Parents aspire to admit their children in an English medium school and need financial help.

Candidates' Profile

These children do not have exposure of a similar urban child in terms of knowledge and skills. They lack several life skills. Since the parents belong to socially backward community they cannot dream of English medium education for their children.

Teach rural students of Class VI, VII and VIII to speak English fluently, read with comprehension and write without errors.

Why the need to help?

The need for learning English - a global language - is strongly felt by rural students who require to face the challenge of communicating in English. Most of the schools are not equipped to fulfill this need. They look forward to the help of NGOs.

Why have Classes VI, VII and VIII been chosen?

No proper English coaching takes place at primary level. At the middle level, the students of Class VI, VII and VIII are unable to cope up with the syllabus of English lessons. They are worried how to meet the challenge in upper Classes. If they do not do well in English, the tendency would be to drop out.

Provide library with interesting pictorial books that will be enjoyed by the children who consequently will develop the habit of reading.

Why the need to help?

The libraries run by the Govt. in the villages keep books suitable for High school or College students. The English books are not attractive to the children and will not help to learn the language.

Why the rural children have been chosen?

The rural children do not have the facility to borrow books and read them leisurely at their homes. They need to be provided with good English books to help them pick up the language.
