English has become an unavoidable language the world over. If our country has to make progress as a powerful nation, it is necessary that majority of our people become proficient in English. With this in view our state Governments have also introduced English language even in the pre- primary system.

To read or write grammatical English, it takes long years. There are not many teachers or trainers to teach. Therefore many of us think that at least the skill of Speaking in English can be achieved quickly. We have observed that this is being made possible by the spoken English courses conducted by many institutes.

Pratham Mumbai Education Initiative has evolved a 3 month Spoken English course. We have split the same into 3 parts:

1. To deal with present tense and pronouns
2. To deal with Past tense and introduce comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs and prepositions
3. To deal with future tense with parts of speech etc.

We have made good efforts to keep the level as low as possible at the same time without losing the degree of quality we want to achieve.

We will not teach grammar but will ensure a grammatically correct usage is employed.

We are compiling a pocket dictionary again in 3 parts  to be presented to every student at the end of coaching of each part.

In the first part, we have selected around 600 verbs which are frequently used by many of us and we have also selected 500 nouns based on these verbs. Meanings in Tamil have been given.  Wherever a single word has several meanings, the most common one understandable by students has been chosen.  Simple sentences and questions in present tense form have been given as samples.

Part-2 and Part-3 of the dictionary is under compilation conforming to our plan of progression

PLANS TO REACH 5000 STUDENTS IN 250 CENTERS IN 30 SESSIONS

Mrs. Madhuri Pai who is heading the Spoken English Project in Mumbai Pratham visited Chennai and trained about 15 Master Trainers for Vidyarambam who have in turn trained more than 100 tutors to take up the Classes of Spoken English.   Centers in the following places have already been launched

The feedback is:   On the 3rd day the students speak about 100 simple sentences of their own.
